UPDATE: U.S. bound Mitsubishi Colt will be an all-new global small car

Yesterday, we reported that Mitsubishi is bringing its small, B-segment Colt to our shores. And that's true, mostly. What we've learned between now and then is that Mitsu isn't bringing over the current Colt, but rather the replacement for the current Colt, i.e. the next Colt. In fact, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. President Osamu Masuko said as much during last month's Tokyo Motor Show. Here's what he told Automotive News: "Mitsubishi will follow that with a global small car in 2012. That car will be smaller than the Colt, which is sold in ... Read more →

Tokyo 2009: Where's the history? 2 months ago on Autoblog

We were frankly astounded that the prospect of a gutted Tokyo Motor Show didn't get any maker, save one, to trot out some of their historical home runs. Even if they didn't want to go in for a nostalgia-fest, a few brands could have at least peppered the show with some of Japan's seminal ...

Tokyo 2009: Makuhari Messe no Jyosei ha Bijin desu* 2 months ago on Autoblog

As far as cars went, the Frankfurt Motor Show was the proverbial glut of riches, and the Tokyo Motor Show proved that you can't live life at the top all the time. Tokyo did, however, still provide plenty of aesthetic beauty, much of which had nothing to do with the automobiles. We won't call it a ...

Tokyo 2009: Autoblog samples quirky Honda U3-X unicycle and other assist devices 2 months ago on Autoblog

If there is one thing humans love, it's personal mobility. After all, what other species regularly harness other creatures for the sole purpose of getting around. The auto industry is all about personal mobility. Since the dawn of the car in the late 19th century, it has been adopted world-wide ...

Tokyo 2009: Yamaha Super Tenere doesn't panic, always knows where its towel is 2 months ago on Autoblog

Yamaha looks to have channeled a bit of BMW with the Super Tenere concept bike that's currently being displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show. Like the Bavarian automaker's Gina concept, the Super Tenere eschews traditional bodywork for a fabric covering supported by some kind of internal skeletal ...

Tokyo 2009: The motorsports cars and bikes 2 months ago on Autoblog

The Tokyo Motor Show doesn't have as much going on in the way of cars as we'd like, but there are still a few gems among the pack – especially in the area of motorsports. The Japanese are as keen about their sports as they are their motors, and when the two are combined, you get some ...

Tokyo 2009: Subaru Legacy B4 GT300 is pure JDM awesomeness 2 months ago on Autoblog

Tokyo 2009: Caterham CSR 175 makes unexpected world debut 2 months ago on Autoblog

It would be tempting to call this year's Tokyo Motor Show an entirely domestic affair, but that's not entirely accurate, as a few smaller specialty automakers like Lotus and Alpina took advantage of a surplus of available square footage by nailing down prime floor space for themselves. As a ...

Tokyo 2009: Mazda RX-500 still awesome nearly 40 years later 2 months ago on Autoblog

One of the coolest concept cars here at the Tokyo Motor Show isn't even new. In fact, it's almost forty years old. Originally displayed at the Tokyo show in 1970, this Mazda RX-500 Concept features styling similar to the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO Breadvan, gullwing doors that swing forward, and ...

Tokyo 2009: Daihatsu's Deca Deca concept is the most popular "super box" in the world 2 months ago on Autoblog

Daihatsu has a way with words: the company calls its Deca Deca concept a "super box," and we'll call it a super super box. A funky little piece of chunk, the Deca Deca has a flat floor – and a flat everything else -- along with pillarless doors that render the interior absolutely ...

Tokyo 2009: Nissan Fuga appears more 'M'pressive 2 months ago on Autoblog

We've always thought that Infiniti's current M35/M45 sedan deserved greater consideration from American consumers than it has typically received. With a strong VQ-series powerplant and entertaining rear-wheel drive handling, there has always been a lot to like from behind the wheel, but its ...

Tokyo 2009: 2010 Toyota Sai hybrid looks suspiciously familiar 2 months ago on Autoblog

Toyota has rolled out its new Sai hybrid here at the Tokyo Motor Show, and if it looks familiar, that's because you've probably seen something very similar wearing "Lexus" and "HS250h" badges. The overall aesthetic of the Sai is very similar to that of its premium sibling, but it features ...

Tokyo 2009: Suzuki Alto Concept tries to be a cooler kei 2 months ago on Autoblog

The Suzuki Alto concept is The Kei You Would Never Suspect: unassuming looks belie the fact that this is car Suzuki is going to use to reach a wider audience. The exterior – which, frankly, looks like a ton of other itty bitty already plying on Japan's streets -- has been subtly tweaked to ...

Tokyo 2009: Daihatsu Tanto Exe and Tanto Exe Custom are boxy and... custom boxy 2 months ago on Autoblog

A "tanto" is a short Japanese sword or dagger, which means the only thing it has in common with the Daihatsu Tanto Exe and Tanto Exe Custom is the descriptor "short" and the additional epithet, "light." Both the Tanto Exe and Exe Custom are "lighter and more fuel efficient versions of the ...

Tokyo 2009: Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo LWB is longer, and therefore better 2 months ago on Autoblog

The Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo long wheelbase revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show today doesn't add anything to the less well-endowed Alpina B7 we saw at Geneva except length, but isn't that enough? The double-turbo'd 4.4-liter V8 brings 507 romping horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque – all of which ...

Tokyo 2009: Daihatsu e:S plays small ball 2 months ago on Autoblog

Daihatsu didn't just bring out its big little guns, it had a couple of tiny guns there as well, such as this, the Volvo C30-esque e:S. Called "a new eco-car that reveals the future role of mini vehicles," it focuses earnestly on environmental impact and "embodies the roles that mini vehicles ...

Tokyo 2009: Mitsubishi i-MiEV Cargo is bigger, o-kei! 2 months ago on Autoblog

You can make anything bigger and better if you just add a hump, and that's what Mitsubishi has done to its i-MiEV to create the i-MiEV Cargo. For those who find Ford's Transit Connect simply too monstrous and don't want to pay for gas – like, oh, a commercial concern in Tokyo – ...

Tokyo 2009: Suzusho Supasse-V strives to be a Le Mans racer for the road 2 months ago on Autoblog

The concept behind the Suzusho Supasse-V is a good one. Take a lightweight chassis, a Le Mans-inspired body, then stuff it with the turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4 from the Mazdaspeed3 and a 6-speed transmission. How can that go wrong? Well, we wouldn't say the Supasse-V is a failed attempt at ...

Tokyo 2009: WRX STi Carbon gets a weave 2 months ago on Autoblog

Most people we talked with don't seem to understand the point of the Subaru WRX STi Carbon unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show – but it's a JDM-only car, and frankly, there are a lot of things that outsiders don't understand about the Japanese market. The carbon-roofed A-Line will come ...

Tokyo 2009: Honda SkyDeck, is this the future of the Odyssey? 2 months ago on Autoblog

Unlike the CR-Z which is nothing more than a thinly veiled preview of an upcoming production model, the Honda Skydeck remains a pure design study at this point. While most automakers would provide a full list of specifications for a concept that is nothing more than a fiberglass buck, Honda isn't ...

Tokyo 2009: Daihatsu Basket concept looking for Little Green Riding Hood 2 months ago on Autoblog

We're sure it wasn't meant this way, but standing beside the Daihatsu Basket concept, you do feel like you could throw things in it, pick the thing up by its t-top crossbar, and take it to a picnic. And carrying it that way would probably be better than driving it. A thoroughly JDM offering, it ...
